In May 2010 a group of 14 people from the Phoenix and Verulam area decided to attempt a humanitarian and spiritual
upliftment project in the village of Thamathu, Lesotho. The group attempted this mission without any financial support of
any organisation or the state. The trip was financed by themselves and donations from families and friends.
Our journey to this village, a mere 435km from Durban proved to be tiring and lengthy due to the condition of the roads
that we traveled on. We met with a local community leader who accompanied us to the village and assisted with
translation. We were amazed at what an impact a kiddies hamper costing a mere R1.50 (if purchased in bulk and repacked)
would have on a child. We were even further moved, when we handed food hampers consisting of canned foods, mealie
meal, candles, and a box of match to households, as we watched their faces light up and eyes fill with tears.
On our return and the weeks that followed we all realised that we could no longer go on with our lives, pretending that
these situations and conditions do not exist, or even ignore it now that we have had first hand experience of it. Hence,
UNITED HANDS OF HOPE was incorporated as a Non-Profit Organisation.
Since then with the generous help of our sponsors we have been able to mobilise basic necessities to various disadvantaged
communities within KwaZulu Natal and into neighboring countries.
We have further issued ourselves with a mandate to assist similar organisations within our communities.
